My own experience with DVD recorders confirms this as well. The image
quality softens badly at the slower DVD speeds, and the digital
artifacts are painfully annoying. I have a 12 year old Sony VHS deck
that was capable of far better image quality at the EP speed than any
DVD recorder that I've seen.
