The amateurs never remove the removeable, colorful stickers from the
camcorder that advertise the various features it has.

They trombone their zooms more than a dixieland band.

They talk while shooting using only the on-cam mic, and think the
on-cam mic will pick up something useful over 50 feet away.

They shoot into the sun and backlighting.

They start and stop while people are in mid-sentence or mid-action.
They don't know how to "edit in-camera".

As to why they bother bringing along their own camcorders, first, they
like the immediacy of having their own version, even if it is bad,
plus, it's "free". They have their own idea of what's important to them
personally and may iso on one person or thing much longer than you ever
would.
