The price difference is huge... actual HDTVs are thousands of dollars,
and they typically come only in big-screen sizes. The HDTV monitor my
sister bought was $350 dollars at Target, and came in a nice, small
kitchen countertop size.
I should point out that this monitor does, in fact, have an NTSC tuner
in it and can receive analog broadcasts. But the sticker on the front
of it says "HDTV" in big letters and "monitor" below in tiny little
letters.
But my bigger concern is that if the FCC really, really wants this DTV
transition to work, they're going to have to sell it to the kinds of
people who don't make a distinction between "HDTV" and "HD monitors".
The vast majority of TV viewers are not drooling technology fanboys;
they go out and buy a tV and expect it to work.
