Clipping is virtually impossible to remove so my guess is you have a
different problem - there are plug-in that attempt it but when you look at
an audio waveform clipping basically cuts the top and bottom off the
waveform and in the process generated enormous odd harmonic distortion. The
process of recoding from AVI to VOB isn't going to change that... anyway
basically you need to go back to the original file, demux it to extract the
video and audio stream. Then in a audio editing program like for example
CoolEdit Pro, process the audio with a compressor/limiter plug-in to reduce
the dynamic range then you can raise the average level that will make the
soundtrack sound louder.

Another approach is since you say the VOB files sound 'better' for whatever
reason than the original avi you could demux the VOB files and do the above,
then recombine them. Good luck...
