Since I wrote, I have discovered that the audio volume is OK in
another player. Unfortunately that player is too old to handle AVIs,
so I have to convert to DVD anyway. But when I do and compare the two
machines, my regular DVDR has the volume problem.

Do I have some setting inside the DVDR incorrect? I set it up
according to the instruction manual. I normally do not have a audio
volume problem with that DVDR - only this particular series of shows.
