I've also experienced the problem with VHS recordings which have been made
from terrestrial or satellite TV, from non-copy-protected channels (i.e. not
movies or similar, just good ol' BBC1). Hence I do not believe that copy
protection can be the problem.

This one doesn't have a PAL/NTSC switch. However I know it works 'cos I used
to use it successfully to remove copy protection when copying from DVD to
VHS. But as I say, this isn't really relevant.
