Thanks, William. That's a big help as I couldn't find too much info on
the web. At least now I know if I persist I may be able to avoid the
digital/analog/digital conversion, which at least one video guy told me
would be necessary.

I do actually use uncompressed source files, as my work is typically
computer animation in segments of 20 to 30 seconds or so, which with
today's large hard drives is no problem. (I have also used HuffyUV
codec as it is lossless but about 2:1 compression.) Because of this, we
have no in house equipment for taped video footage at all (not even a DV
camera!!) which is why having everything as avi files on computer disks
is optimal. Also, MPEG-2 is only one of the final formats for the
video, as I also create RealPlayer and Windows Media files for our web
site, which is why I normally work in square pixels as well.
