Reply to Synchronizing playback of video decks?

A newbie question that I'm hoping has a simple answer.

Our production company is currently presenting a 95-minute silent film
at festivals with live orchestra and foley accompaniment. To keep the
conductor in sync, we take LTC off one audio channel of the Digibeta
master, feed it into a MOTU 828 driving Digital Performer which plays
back a QT movie of the film that has overlaid visual cues (streamers
and flutters). This has proven to be fragile.

I'm wondering if it's easier to synchronize two video decks, the master
with the tape for the audience and the slave with timecode burn,
overlaid video cues, etc. Having no experience in this area, is it
possible to just hook up the Sony 9-pin from the master deck to the
slave deck and have the slave deck chase the master frame-by-frame?

Hoping there's a simpler solution that doesn't involve a laptop and
fragile software!

Thanks,
