Greetings... It sounds like your LINE IN is activated under "Playback"
but is not selected under "Record." Some things to consider:

1) Computer "LINE IN" devices are notoriously noisy. Even though
cassettes are not the highest quality audio source, the PC card can
add artifacts and make it sound worse than the original tape.

2) After you fix your LINE IN problem, 1 meg per minute is usually
128k-Stereo, and yes you can get minor to major loss of quality. Even
though cassettes generally sound like 22khz recordings, lower end
frequencies can be lost when converting to MP3.

3) All cassettes have some amount of hiss, and that includes Dolby or
otherwise. Try to use an audio program that allows you to eliminate
the noise and you'll be happier with the results.

4) If you're interested I can produce cassette to CD-R or
full-fidelity MP3 conversion for only $10.00 per hour of audio (1 hr
min.) plus shipping/handling. Nothing fancy mind you, just a good
clean recording using USB analog conversion and Cool Edit Pro/Adobe
Audition for mastering/noise reduction.
