Yes, that might be a better connection scheme in this case. The only
problem I can foresee is that if the DR-MV1S is recording something
using its built-in tuner, it might prevent watching the signal from the
daisy-chained DVB set-top-box - the opposite of the original problem.

Then again, the built-in tuner of DR-MV1S is analog, so perhaps the OP
doesn't want to use that at all. (In the "best" case, he might live in
an area where the analog switch-off will happen sooner rather than
later, and once that has happened, the analog tuner will be useless,
anyway.)

What I'm wondering is whether the OP has any free SCART sockets on his
tv set.

Kinda. It's two-way for composite video and stereo audio (i.e. you can
replace two American-style triple-RCA A/V cables with a single SCART
lead), but one-way for RGB or s-video.

The European version of DR-MV1S has two SCART sockets (the image is a
bit dark; you may need to lighten it up a bit in a paint program to
