On reading further about this, I've come to the conclusion that you don't
know what you are talking about... or at least you need to be more specific
about which LCD projectors you are talking about.
The Panasonic AE700 (which we were using with this player) takes the 1080i
signal, de-interlaces this back to 1080p, then scales it down to 720p for
display on its panel (this is the native res for this pj).

V1.4 firmware on the Toshiba HD-A1 is a bit b0rked for audio and other
things -it is said that the internal scaler is also not as good as it should
be... therefore the one in the projector in this case should do the job
better (hence why we outputted 1080i from the player).

The guy who owns this player is abroad at the moment, so we
couldn't/wouldn't update the firmware.
V2.0 is said to have a better scaling algorithm.


Again, there is no doubt that the image will be improved with a 'pure' 1080
signal -but I wouldn't expect it to be a "I've seen the error of my ways"
moment.

I do like HDDVD and it will be nice if it gets to be used by non-geek types
in a straightforward manner (ie. stick-in-the-plug-away-you-go).
I agree with you that it's all a horrible mess right now... mainly because
there are so many options/ways to present the "HD image" -but a lot of
current LCD projectors _are_ HDREADY and do not downscale/upscale in the
manner you say... according to everything I've read on avforums, etc.
