No consumer product is safe. They're all guaranteed to take years off your
player, assuming it survives the first application. Scraping off dust (read:
tiny abrasive rocks) off a lens at high speed is a surefire way of destroying
it. Just because you have the skills to insert a cleaning disk doesn't make
it a good idea. There are literally thousands of things that can go and a
dirty lesn is only one of them and only likely if you live in a place where you
have to dust your furniture hourly.
Pull the unit out of your stereo system; remove the screws for the cover and you
examine the lens to see if it's sitting under a pile of dirt. Most likely, its
fine. It you must clean it, use a lint free applicator and denatured rubbing
alcohol.
