One kind of crackpot, yet effective way to cheat the distance is to use
a first-surface mirror to bounce the image and change the effective
distance. Normal everyday mirrors will give a disappointing result of a
slight double-image from the front of the glass reflecting as well as
the back. You need a true first-surface mirror like the beamsplitter
of a good teleprompter to make this trick work. And a firm but
adjustable way to mount it.
