Not necessarily, if the DVD recorder supports externally controlled
recording. For example, many VHS VCRs do, and I've heard that at least
some DVD recorders have the same feature. Here's an excerpt from the
manual of one such device (VCR, in this case, but the OP might want to
check the manual of his DVD recorder for something similar):

(What the OP calls "Freeview" is called "DVB-T" for the rest of us. Just
mentioning this for clarification since we're on an international forum.
"Freeview" is a catch-all label/branding used for free-to-air DVB-T
broadcasts specifically in the UK.)
