Oh dearie me. You are about to get a dozen conflicting answers to this
one, maybe half will be backed by misdirection of the inept taking their
own sorry cases for a generality.
First off I'd be surprised if you could set up a half decent HDV capable
edit suite for 5,000 USD, but then I'm in the UK and many things are
cheaper over there. Over here it'd be a MINIMUM of 5,000 pounds
sterling, or about 8,500 USD
The issues to consider regarding Apple and PC are many. One thing about
Apple and Final Cut Pro is that the hardware/software compatibility is a
relatively simple matter, coming out of the same box as it were. PC's
are another reality since a gr4at many apparently professional/expert
turn key system providers are utter crap. However if one is able to
configure a PC and software properly, basically using the very best
components without regard to cost, systems based on Premier Pro 1.5 HDV
or Premier Pro 2 or Canopus Edius v.4 are excellent. I operate;
3 x PC systems with both Canopus SP/Edius and Premier Pro
1 x Dual Processor Apple G5 FCP 5
1 x Dual Processor Apple G4 FCP 5
Our PC systems are more stable and handle HDV better.
Others get differing results.
