Did you use the "4:3 STANDARD" setting or the "4:3 LETTERBOX" setting in
the DVD player? The "4:3 STANDARD" mode will crop the left and right
sides off of some widescreen pictures and magnify the center to fill a
TV screen.

The content on the disc is encoded as I described it, as a widescreen
image with black bars on the sides. The active picture area in the
center only uses 540x480 pixels. If the DVD player is set for "4:3
LETTERBOX", you'll see black bars on all 4 sides (the player adds the
bars at the top and bottom). If the DVD player is set for "4:3
STANDARD", the side bars are cropped off and the middle zoomed, but
you're still only using 540x480 resolution.

As I said before, it's best for the studio to encode all material at the
highest 720x480 resolution and let the TV do the aspect ratio control.
Anything else compromises quality for the sake of convenience.
