Does this happen with all discs or only certain ones? I have some DVD-RAM
discs that exhibit this behaviour. As far as I can tell the sound is coming
from the drive hub not seating properly on the disc - I just don't use that
disc - anymore. I have not had this problem with the DVD-R/RW discs.

You might try slightly scuffing the hub ring with an abrasive pencil erasor
(BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GET ANY DUST OR PARTICLES INSIDE THE DISC
CARTRIDGE!) as that may help it seat better.
