Even if you want to cut/edit after digitizing, I found that the better
option is to use a quality stand-alone recorder first.
It will digitize your tapes to DVDs or HD and you can then transfer (copy)
them to your PC for editing/authoring.

One word of advice concerning the digitizing procedure:
Keep your quality high and use constant (not variable) bitrate, or some
editors and authoring programs will not like to work with them.

If you have a 6-hour video tape, it's best to record (digitize) it to 2 hour
sessions (DVD) or even 1 hour sessions (HD).
That makes it easier to copy/work with. Choose your best setting on the
recorder for the segments.
