At the risk of repeating myself, even with those little fans you must
allow air to flow around all parts of the case. Allow 1" space all
around. You can use plastic crutch tips to lift the unit - just hot
glue gun them on the bottom. You can literally feel the difference in
temperature before and after.
With the new HDD units this is going to become even more of an issue.
The number one killer of hard disks is heat. If you keep a hard disk
cool (30-40C) and not allow it to get hot (50-60C) it will last an
incredibly long time even running 24x7. I just got 7 years out of a WD
Caviar.
