 They already do. My TV set switches automatically between 625/50 and
 525/60, which enables me to watch foreign recordings, but broadcasters
 currently produce all their output in one standard or another, having
 to convert any material supplied on a different standard from the one
 they are required to use. Are you suggesting that broadcasters should
 abandon this standardisation and viewers should be required to
 re-equip with multiscan displays?
 
 I've never heard of a TV set that used the frequency of the mains AC
 supply for anything. Scanning waveforms are generated from oscillators
 that have to be locked to the incoming signal.
