Actually, that first layer was an engineering feat beyond compare!
Absolutely perfectly level, and true to the axis of the planet. The
error off true north is about one twelfth of a degree.
Lasers didn't come until nearly 5000 years later.
We can't even hang a picture straight... (well I CAN)!
