There's iTunes for Windows (which is free), but the problem stays the
same - the player is software, rather than OS, specific.
If you'd like to know exactly what files are on your player, and
manipulate them directly, make sure you get one that supports a
"Harddisk mode". Many do - when you plug them in, they appear as an
external harddisk or memory stick.
Careful with those that support Windows Media Player 10 - many of them
will only appear in HD mode on machines that do not have WMP10
installed. As soon as it is there, it kicks in, takes over the player,
and prevents direct file acces - at least, I have not found a way to
switch it off on the PC side. Some players (e.g. Archos) support
switching it off on the player side. Some (e.g. Samsung last time I
looked) do not.
Regards,
Gilles.
