Yes, many commercial clients seem to be opting for HDV or even SD shot on an
HDV camera. I'm truly saddened to hear that the Sony V1 will not shoot both
PAL and NTSC SD as the Z1 does. That would have been perfect....

Ostensibly XDCam was going to be in play, it seems, as a "tapeless"
alternative for non-linear editing. But at present, at least, it takes
almost as long to import XD clips into the Avid as it does to digitize tape,
and one doesn't get to choose in and out points, so in many instances it
takes even longer to get the relevant material on the disk. Yes, of course
one can use proxy files, but the quality is very poor. We'll see where it
goes, but I get the feeling that XDCam is a bit of a nonstarter. For
Panasonic P2 might fly if the price of memory drops enough soon enough. For
non-linear it is certainly the better format, as it doesn't need digitizing,
but then you have to dump the files to somewhere, whereas the XD carts are
pretty handy.
