To the best of my knowledge, at the present time, not a single editing
system understands the AVCHD format, and this includes Sony's own
Vegas software NLE product, although I'm sure that this situation will
soon change.

Both of Sony's AVCHD camcorders ship with Windows-only software for
transferring footage from the camcorder to a computer via USB, but
this is of no help to you if you're a Mac user.

In a few day's time, you'll be able to purchase a Blackmagic Design
Intensity card, suitable for both Mac OS X and Windows XP systems, and
transfer data from the camcorder to your computer via HDMI. At that
point, you can either edit uncompressed (if your system can handle it,
that is), or transcode to the intermediate codec of your choice for
editing.
