I'm beginning to wonder if it's something to do with producing the SD
broadcast masters from the HD originals. The show was shot, cut (and indeed
broadcast) on HD, and it's possible that something went wrong on the
transfer to SD, in which case it is sortable and needs to be looked at ASAP.
The smeary motion was noticeable on the trailers, which could have been
produced from those masters. Interestingly, the same effect was also
noticeable on the trails for Wide Sargasso Sea, but the show itself looked
fine. I presumed that the same would happen with Torchwood, that the weird
motion would just be on the trails and that the show would be fine, but it
wasn't, it looked just as bad as the trails.
I've tried to alert the BBC to this, but I'm assuming the process will be
terrible slow, which is a shame as if it is the masters then it would be a
simple matter to produce new ones for the broadcast on Wed. After all, Wide
Sargasso Sea proves that someone there knows how to do it right!
