Since I first read about this here, I discovered a thread (really long)
about this in the AVS Forums:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=675487

Somewhere in the thread somebody explains that all you do is install a new
drive and restart the unit. It has been tried it with a variety of drives
and they all worked.

I would have to use it with a digital cable box. Unlike a TIVO, it can't
change the channel on the cable box with an IR blaster. This would make it
harder to use for timer recordings. The cable box would have to be turned
on and set to the proper channel ahead of time.
