Tried playing MPEG2 VOB files just for you.

Ripped two VOB files from a DVD, and copied them to a CD-RW disc and a USB
hard drive. They played, but stuttered really badly, most likely because of
the high bitrates. Suggest that you convert MPEG2 files to MPEG4 AVI which
the player handles beautifully.

Don't have MPEG1 files handy, but I don't expect any problems.
