This is somewhat misleading. The digital video standard for NTSC is 720
pixels by 480 pixels, and all standard definition digital video cameras will
be in this format. However, "resolution" also refers to the resolving
ability of the camera and format. VHS has a maximum resolution of around
240 lines. Hi8 can reach 450 lines or so. DV-25, i.e. miniDV and Digitial
8, is capable of up to 525 lines of resolution. However, cheap miniDV and
D8 cameras test as low as around VHS resolution, i.e. 250 to 325 lines.
Only the better miniDV cameras will exceed 500 lines. The difference
between a bottom-run consumer miniDV camcorder and a high-level consumer or
prosumer machine is far more than a "slightly sharper image." The
difference is quite dramatic.
