If you use final cut, there's a ten-dollar plug-in from digital heaventhat will fix the missing pixels in your shots while editing. Check out
their web site for a demo.

As to another 8mm camcorder, I'd skip getting a new one in that format,
and if the Canon you have is just plain dead, instead get a used 8mm
camcorder or deck off ebay or something to finish transferring your old
legacy stuff while you save up to get a DV-based camcorder with
firewire for the future. If you pick one in the 3-400 dollar range they
will have an analog input so you can transfer the old stuff and also
old VHS tapes thru this and on into the computer using firewire,
converting on the fly. Same with the old 8mm if it is still working,
you can feed it pass-thru the new Dv camcorder and into the computer to
 edit.

I would also say stay away from the mini-DVD camcorders, they are
nothing but hassle especially if you want to edit.
