I've heard the gurus have left the building. I'll try to answer your question with the
little I know; please be gentle if you find mistakes.
WinMX Peer Network (WPN) and OpenNap Networks are independent from one another, i.e. you
can connect to one or many at same time.
WinMX is the only client that runs on WPN, but it's one of many clients (including older
WinMX versions) that can connect to OpenNap.
Some differences:
-WPNP and OpenNap protocol use different hashing algorithms.
-Incomplete downloads from WPN have hash in file name; incompletes on OpenNap have zeroes.
-'Auto File Search', 'Auto Enter Queue' and 'Search for Alternates' work on WPN only.
-'Retry' and 'Auto Retry' work on OpenNap only.
-Identical files are grouped together on WPN searches but not on OpenNap.
-WinMX can download a single file from multiple sources on WPN but not on OpenNap.
-Browse on WPN is limited to 3000 files for secondaries and 5000 for primaries; on OpenNap
the number of files is up to each operator, who may choose to disable browse altogether.
-OpenNap users can be added permanently to Hotlist. Your chances of finding a particular
user again are better on OpenNap (short of meeting in chatrooms).
-Searches on WPN are performed by your primary through a network of primaries and go a few
nodes deep in the network. You are likely to get different results when re-connecting to
different primaries.
-Searches on a particular OpenNap network are performed by the server you're connected to,
who should have a list of all available files on its network. Your results are likely to
be consistent when re-connecting, however each operator can limit the number of search
results you get. Thus is better to refine your queries as well as possible.
-Search operators may not work on OpenNap.
-On OpenNap you may choose to report a speed different from your default when you exceed a
certain number of uploads.
-WPN users report different Whois info.
-The search window displays different status for WPN.
-WinMX doesn't ping OpenNap users.
