Then they got overconfident and believed that nobody else DESERVED to
change it unless they tackled the problem first, in their own isolated
environment.
Formats could have taken hold earlier with fewer "wars", but no, the
baby wanted his old corporate-monopoly bottle.

(Almost becoming the bigscale equivalent of Tiger Electronics, which, to
this *day*, still tries to leap on any new bona fide portable-media hit
like UMD disks or iPod Video the moment they're announced, and sell
their own made-up Toys-R-Us version with 1985 technology...)
