Check and see if firefox is altering the timestamp on your hosts file.
Firefox has a lot of addons available, and you haven't addressed that
issue. Any one of them could be programed to do semi-odd things. A
patched WinMX could be detecting this and refreshing the hosts file to
its default winmx state. Any number of things could be happening, and
I'm afraid without sitting at your system I can only guess and grasp.
Have you done any searching using the version of firefox you're running,
any add-ons, and the hosts file as keywords?
