It depends on which satellites you want to aim at.
If it's T-5, there is no less-expensive way to do
it than buy a stand alone DVB receiver and TV set
If it's some other service, the easiest method is
to use a used receiver for the service you are
aiming for, then move the coax over to your DVB
receiver. Other than that- buy a signal meter. A
good compass (good, meaning not cheap) is indespensible
at getting a good head-start on an aim job. Plan
on spending $50 minimum for the compass. Also a good
level, because it is of ultimate importance to get
your dish pipe absolutely plumb to make it easy to
aim. If it's off 2 or 3 degrees, you'll pay for it
in difficulty of aiming. Another "easy" way to aim
for Telstar-5 (also known as Intelsat Americas 5) is
to use a DirecTV receiver and circular polarization
LNB to line up on 101. Then it's a snap to change
the LNB back to linear and swap receivers, then move
east to 97 to acquire the T5 signal. If you get lost,
you can switch back and line back up on 101 again.
DirecTV's 101 sat is powerful and easy to find, which
is not true of IA-5 (T-5).
