Shooting HDV will give you better picture quality to start with and
also allow you to create content that will be HD if and when you should
want it. The downconvert quality for the meantime will be fine.

I just shot a bunch of footage on our demo HD100 (which is for sale,
incidentally, if you want to save some $) and am going to do exactly
what you're thinking about.
