I agree.
The (badly written) components of iTunes I despise are
- iTunes automatically deletes songs under very common circumstances!
- iTunes insists on installing unwanted unneeded software (Quicktime)
- iTunes can't install (QuickTime) without creating C:\Program Files!
- iTunes constantly tries to connect to the Internet!
- iTunes can't easily copy from the iPod back to the PC!
In the past few days, thanks to all of you, I've tested a half dozen of the
freeware suggestions and most do most of the above.
I'm leaning toward SharePod v1.7 as my final solution

http://www.sturm.net.nz/website.php?Section=iPod+Programs&Page=SharePod
SHAREPOD DOES NOT SEEM TO BE AS BADLY WRITTEN AS ITUNES IS
- SharePod never automatically deletes music (deletes are always manual)!
- SharePod doesn't install unwanted software (in fact, SharePod doesn't
intall ANYTHING on the PC! Yep. Nothing. Zilch. Zip. Nada.!
- SharePod doesn't create a dumb C:\Program Files directory! (as I said,
SharePod doesn't install ANYTHING on the PC!)
- SharePod never tries to connect to the Internet!
- SharePod can easily copy from any iPod back to any PC!
In addition
- SharePod can easily copy from ANY PC to ANY iPod!
WooHoo! I think we found at least one perfectly good freeware iPod
alternative software program that isn't as badly written as iTunes can
easily be proven to be!
I plan on deleting iTunes from my system after breathing a sigh of release
to be rid of easily proven badly written iTunes crapware!
