There was a discussion of this exact question either here or in
news:rec.video.desktop in the last 2-3 months. IIRC, the consensus
was that the Panny DVCpro machines won't play consumer DV
tapes properly, but I don't remember the details. Yes, Sony machines
are known to be much more likely to play consumer DV. I use both
my DSR-11 and DSR-20 to read mini-DV on a regular basis. And
I even use my DSR-11 to write mini-DV, also.
