Just curious: What sort of "inevitable proximity effect diminution" are you
referring to?

Even a reasonable compressor (a given at a show like that) would minimise
any change in perceived _volume_ with distance. Besides, mic placement can
be learned and practised just like everything else - meaning it can be
lip-synched also.

Changes in freq response with distance are something else entirely..
