FWIW I was also searching for a no BS MP3 Player. I eventually bought
the Samsung YP-C1 (the 1GB model):

Lots of other reviews out there.
It comes with the USB drivers for W98 where it's recognized as a
standard USB thumb drive. It's atuomatically recognized as such in
Suse 10.0 so It should be the same for W2K, ME and XP.
Note that I don't use W2K or XP so I can't comment on that. I also
haven't used an Apple player so I can't comment on that. My
requirements were:
-small
-uses a standard battery rather than built-in rechargeable. There's
nothing worse than the battery dying halfway between here and there.
-Preferably the battery was a AA instead of AAA for longer playtime.
-Standard USB drive interface
-Handles OGG format. (I haven;t swithced over but wanted the option)
Another feature it has (which I haven't needed or tried) is a plug on
the USB cable so can encode right to MP3 from an external player.
It's biggest minus as far as I can see is that the user interface
isn't as clear as the Apple products. Again, I've never used one so I
can't really comment on that.
