there were no illegal characters in the filenames.

I found that if I created an m3u playlist using VLC then I could open
it with WMP9 or Winamp and the files would play ok. So in WMP9 I
selected each song in turn and did a "Save Media As...." and saved them
all to my music archive on my slave HDD and everything is tickedy-boo
