Yep, I had a direct side by side demo of the XH-A1 and the HVR-V1E.

It is a very close choice between two fantastic cameras. I chose the
Sony over the Canon as it had a better picture, much less video looking
and unbelievable colour reproduction. A very natural look without that
"Sony" bluey video look. I also value the Prime Support package which
the Canon does not have so 2 years peace of mind. But by far the
biggest reason for choosing the Sony was the gargantuan LCD. An
absolute dream to find focus on unlike the Canon's which is just too
small and I thought I might struggle to regularly hit critical focus
with it. Not only that the Sony can have Zebras, Peaking and Histogram
active while shooting which makes focusing and exposing dead easy. I
thought the histogram would be a gimmick but it isn't. It is a really
useful tool and I'd be at a loss without it now.

The Canon has by far the most parameters for fiddlers in the known
universe whereas the Sony is very modest but everything that one would
expect to find is there such as film like gamma curves and black and
white point control etc etc.

So, its is a very difficult decision. I imagine if I were you I'd go
the Canon route as the picture would cut better with your current
equipment.

If you ever read anyone saying that one camera is vastly superior to the
other you know they are talking out of their ass!!! Very close.

Two great cameras.
