Yeah, Martin I agree. I am not as productive in FCP as I was in Avid as
I had years and years of time in Avid an unlearning is difficult. FCP
is a nice tool and is a million miles aways from the dross it used to
be. I haven't had it crash at all on my MBP and the integration with
the other appz in Studio is ace.
The reasons I dropped Avid was their protectionist attitude towards
Xpress users and the buggy updates. They limit the functionality to
protect MC whereas in FCP I can import, edit and output anything my
computer is capable of. In the new year I'll buy the 8 core Mac Pro,
FCP 6 and an AJA HD card all for little more than the price of the
software version of Media Composer (which still isn't a universal binary
yet!).
You are right, the days of people putting all their eggs in one basket
has long gone. There are so many excellent tools out there now and the
hegemony of one or two accepted system suppliers is now well and truly
broken there is no reason not to use the tool that best suits one's
needs and budget.
cheers
