Do you have any 'stereo enhancement' type settings enabled in the TV?
I'm asssuing the SCART is only passing on a downmixed stereo analog? If
a DVD offers both 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby audio, is there a difference?

Basically, I think some downmix or other issue is causing what would be
the center channel to be suppressed. Many stereo enhancement features
work by weakening center sounds (equal volume and phase in both
channels) and enhacing differences (unequal volume and/or phase between
channels.) If the DVD player is further downmixing 5.1 into stereo,
there could be other issues with how they are doing it.
