Since you say its a combo unit, I wonder if the built-in copy protection is
somehow being turned on.
I have seen similar things happen when a PS2 tries to play a DVD on a TV/VCR
combo. If a tape is inserted, the copy protection kicks in and the output
either DVD or game is messed up.
