That is an older unit. Treat yourself to a newer one. I believe the
DVP 5960 replaced it. It supports DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW and NTSC/PAL,
has an HDMI connection, DivX/XviD support and a USB 1.1 port.

My son has one for his 62" Mistubishi HDMI TV and it is an excellent
player for AVIs in component video.

They are based on different technology. Consumer blank discs are
dye-based and the dye is different, among other things.
