So what? That was virtually all that was available as display
devices at the time. Even the ultra rich didn't have high res or
progressive scan yet. The military... maybe.
So "forever constrained"? Naw.... We would have digitized it by
now, and the new would still have read the old discs. Also, imagine
the data rates one could obtain from the outer regions of the disc.
The high data rate high res stuff would be out there, and the low res
previews, etc. would be in at the hub.
The problem with LD was the form factor.
LD is too huge, too bulky, and it presents the hardware designers
with too many technical hurdles to make good gear for it. The wobble
at the edge of a twelve inch platter can be huge.
