A couple of points:
DVD's are not the same as CD's. The active layer of a CD is right below the
top coating of the label side; the active layer of a DVD is buried in the
center of the disc and cannot be destroyed by any common solvent.
Acetone will attack polycarbonate, which is what the discs are made of,
although it isn't a matter of instant ruin.
Sharpie pens are just the ticket to write on both DVDR and CDR. The ink can
be removed by alcohol; plain isopropyl alcohol. Indeed, this is what I use
to remove Sharpie ink when I make a mistake.
