My Toshiba Satellite (A75-S206) came with a Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2512
drive that is DVD/CD-RW capable and InterVideo WinDVD was preinstalled
by the manufacterer. Playing CDs and watching DVDs were never
problematic, until recently ...
I popped the DVD into the drive, like usual, and WinDVD automatically
opened. The weird thing was when WinDVD opened, my screen resolution
went from 1280x800 to the lower setting of 1024x768 pixels. Pressing
the Play button in WinDVD did nothing, as well as right-clicking and
choosing the DVD menu. So I closed WinDVD and my screen immediately
went back to the 1280x800 resolution!
Then, I tried watching the DVD in Windows Media Player (never any
previous problems with watching DVDs in Media Player either).
Thankfully, the screen resolution did not change. But when I clicked
on the little arrow next to the Now Playing tab for the Quick Access
Panel, it said I had a CD in my drive and proceeded to play my DVD as a
CD ... complete with "track" listing in the Now Playing List pane.
I haven't been able to gleen any similar predicaments from any of the
other postings, but one suggestion someone had made me think this was
the problem I had on my hands ... the laser part of my drive that reads
DVDs is no longer working?
Luckily, I purchased a three-year warrantee with my laptop but I wanted
to get some opinions about possible software or driver issues before I
hauled my laptop to the store. I've already downloaded the latest
driver for my drive and I've been looking for patches on InterVideo's
site but their only suggestion is to fork over more money for their
latest version. I've only tried playing purchased DVDs, nothing
pirated.
Thanks, I appreciate any help anyone can give me!
(I'm running Windows XP SP2, fully updated)
