Thanks for your replies - I will have another look later.
 I know where the default setting for recording is, but I think that may
 be for new recordings. If I have already recorded it to HDD, I want to
 then put it onto a DVD but at a lower quality. Maybe changing the
 quality then pressing the copy will allow more on a disk.
 
 The screenshots in the manual suggest it should prompt me to change the
 quality when I record to disk. I just get a "not enough room - OK" type
 error.
 
 I think the issue about dual layer is only on the 250GB models and one
 of the 160GB models. I was a tightwad buying only the 80GB (I thought
 it was purely the HDD size that changed, and I had plans of buying a
 bigger drive at a later date)!! That'll teach me!!
