I found it particularly handy for documentary shooting (e.g. 'tracking
shots' of people moving around and following or leading them). With a
big camera you could get decent shots like that just by sticking it on
your shoulder, but with a small DV or Hi8 camera the Steadicam was far
more stable than trying to hold it by hand.
