There's almost no way they'll hop on the bandwagon any time soon after what
is probably going to happen to LG because of this. Last week the Microsoft
rep on the DVD Forum said that the Forum and Microsoft were both considering
legal action against LG. With Microsoft's bankroll, they'll put LG through a
very expensive legal battle over this, and one LG will most certainly lose.
Because LG can't apparently even legally advertise it plays HD-DVD, how much
exposure is this player really going to get other than from people who know
from articles about CES that it is being produced? Furthermore, it's not
that it doesn't just play menus, it does not play ANY extra content on
HD-DVD disks. So no bloopers, actor interviews, etc. The only thing it will
play on an HD-DVD disk is the main content. That is not going to sit well
with customers that want to see the extras on their DVDs that are advertised
on the box. People that buy this player only to get it home and find it
doesn't play extras are going to get very unhappy and return it quickly.
I was originally very excited about the LG player, but this one's doomed to
fail because they did it half-assed, and then chose not to do it IMO the
easy way and just include both drives in one player. To compound these
mistakes, they further pissed off the 3,000 lb gorilla in the room by not
telling Microsoft and the Forum before they announced the player publicly.
I really don't think the HD-DVD camp is interested in dual players, and will
find reasons not to license one for the foreseeable future. It's just not in
Bill Gates and Microsoft's nature to compromise, and they're the ones with
the most money, and therefore the most clout, on the HD-DVD side.
